The Castle of Greinburg in the area of Strudengau in Upper
Austria lies 60 km west of Linz. Widely visible, the
imposing collection of buildings
overlooks the Danube and
the picturesque city of Grein. A number of rooms on the
second floor of the East Wing had already been fitted out
as living quarters during the reign of Duke Ernst II.
In 1922 after the death of his mother, the Duchess Helene
of Albany, Duke Carl Eduard inherited some high quality
pieces of furniture and significant paintings, some of
which had been part of the private collection of his
grandmother, Queen Victoria of England. After the end of
the Second World War and the occupation of Greinburg by
the Russian army a large part of the art treasures were
carried off. Fortunately some of these lost valuables
were later discovered and returned to Greinburg.
